Explaining Demeter and Persephone

For me the myth of Demeter and Persephone speaks of the intimate love between mother and child and the fact that their wholeness is dependent on this bond. I chose to re-tell the myth of Demeter and Persephone through employing a non-gender specific symbolic image by the artist Amanda Shelsher, combined with the musical piece 'Et Misericordia' by Vivaldi. To me this image, coupled with this music, with its plurality of voices, speaks of love, humanity, vulnerability, and emotional tenderness and dependency between two humans. It speaks of helplessness in the face of uncontrollable events and the misery of life, and of human despair and beauty. It symbolizes the parent's protective love and bond with its child, and more generally the bond between any people who may rely on one another for understanding, compassion and empathy.
